Biography
Feodor Ingvar Kamprad was born on March 30, 1926, in Pjätteryd, a small village in the Småland region of southern Sweden. He showed interest in business from a very young age, starting by selling matches to neighbors and then moving on to sell fish, Christmas tree decorations, and seeds in the nearby area. After his grandfather gave him money for collecting debts, Kamprad used that to start his own business ventures. By the time he was seventeen in 1943, he had registered IKEA as a business, naming it after his initials, along with those of his family farm, Elmtaryd, and his home parish, Agunnaryd.
Before Fame
Growing up in the rural Småland region of Sweden, Kamprad was influenced by the area's culture of thriftiness and resourcefulness. The people there were known for making the most of limited resources, an attitude that would later shape IKEA's business approach. Kamprad's father managed a small farm, and the family's modest situation gave him a lifelong dislike for waste and unnecessary spending. His early sales activities, starting around age five, showed a unique knack for business that stood out long before he became an adult.
