Biography
Ivo Sanader was born on June 8, 1953, in Split, Croatia, and became a key political figure in Croatia after it gained independence. He studied comparative literature at the University of Innsbruck in Austria, then worked in various areas like journalism, marketing, publishing, and business. This diverse career gave him valuable skills for his future in politics. In the 1990s, he briefly led the Croatian National Theatre in Split before moving into government roles.
Sanader joined Croatian politics during the early years of the nation's independence. He became a member of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) and served as Minister for Science and Technology in Hrvoje Šarinić's cabinet in 1992. His political career quickly advanced as he took on diplomatic roles in 1993, serving two terms as Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs. This international experience gave him important insights into foreign policy and European integration, key themes during his time as Prime Minister.
After President Franjo Tuđman passed away, Sanader was elected president of the HDZ in 2000 and led the party back to power after a short time in opposition. He became Prime Minister in December 2003 after winning the election and was re-elected in 2007, making him one of only two Croatian prime ministers to serve multiple terms. His government focused on European Union accession talks and economic reforms, paving the way for Croatia's future EU membership. Sanader served for over five and a half years, making him the second longest-serving prime minister in Croatia's independent history.
Sanader's political career ended suddenly in July 2009 when he resigned without explanation and vanished from public life for a time. His attempt at a comeback in 2010 failed when the HDZ expelled him. In December 2010, Croatian authorities charged him with corruption, leading to his escape from the country. He was later arrested in Austria and sent back to Croatia in 2011, where he stood trial and was convicted on several corruption charges related to his time as Prime Minister, marking a drastic fall from grace.
