Biography

Jacobus Antonius Peter Johannes Cillessen, known as Jasper Cillessen, was born on 22 April 1989 in Nijmegen, Netherlands. A professional goalkeeper, he has represented some of the most prominent clubs in European football across a career spanning more than a decade, earning recognition both domestically and internationally.

Cillessen began his association with NEC Nijmegen at the youth level in 2001, progressing through the academy before making his professional debut for the club in 2010. His performances attracted attention from AFC Ajax, who signed him for a fee of €3 million in 2011. At Ajax, Cillessen established himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in the Eredivisie, appearing in 141 matches over six seasons and contributing to three Eredivisie title victories. His consistent displays earned him the AFC Ajax Player of the Year award in both 2015 and 2016, a rare distinction that reflected his importance to the club during that period.

In the summer of 2016, Cillessen made the move to Spain, joining FC Barcelona for an initial fee of €13 million. While his role at Barcelona was largely as a backup to first-choice goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen, he gained experience in LaLiga and the Copa del Rey, adding Spanish top-flight football to his résumé. After three years at the Catalan club, he transferred to Valencia CF in 2019, where he served as the first-choice goalkeeper for three seasons before returning to his hometown club NEC Nijmegen.

On the international stage, Cillessen received his first call-up to the Netherlands national team in May 2011 and made his senior debut in 2013. He became the country's first-choice goalkeeper and played a key role as the Netherlands finished third at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Over the course of his international career, he earned more than 30 caps for the national side, cementing his place among the notable Dutch goalkeepers of his generation.

Before Fame

Cillessen grew up in Nijmegen, a city in the eastern Netherlands with a long footballing tradition rooted in the club NEC. He joined NEC's youth academy in 2001 at the age of twelve, spending nearly a decade developing his skills within the club's training structures before breaking into the first team in 2010.

His early professional years coincided with a period of strong competition for goalkeeping positions in Dutch football. Making his mark at NEC was enough to attract the attention of AFC Ajax, one of the Netherlands' most storied clubs, setting the stage for his rise to national and European prominence.
