Biography
Jayme Tiomno was born on April 16, 1920, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Russia. Growing up in a quickly developing Brazil, he showed a strong talent for the natural sciences early on. He went to the University of São Paulo for his higher education, a top school in Latin America. Afterwards, he pursued advanced studies at Princeton University in the United States, where he learned from the leading physicists of his time and explored important theoretical and experimental questions in physics during the mid-20th century.
Before Fame
Growing up as the son of Russian Jewish immigrants in Rio de Janeiro, Tiomno experienced significant social and political changes in Brazil. Although world-class scientific education was hard to come by, he stood out enough to study at the University of São Paulo and later at Princeton University, where he was influenced by people like John Archibald Wheeler. His time studying across continents put him in the middle of the postwar physics world, giving him the theoretical background and international connections that would shape his future career in Brazil. His early exposure to top work in nuclear and particle physics guided his research for many years.
