Biography

José Inácio de Abreu e Lima was born on April 6, 1794, in Recife, in what was then the Captaincy of Pernambuco, Brazil, and he passed away in the same city on March 8, 1869. He was a Brazilian military officer, politician, journalist, and writer known for his unique mix of revolutionary military service in different regions and extensive intellectual work in Brazil. Although he was born in Brazil, he became a key figure in the Spanish American wars of independence, earning the rank of general under Simón Bolívar and becoming famous across much of South America.

Before Fame

Abreu e Lima was born into a politically active family in Recife during a time of significant colonial unrest. His father, José Inácio Ribeiro de Abreu e Lima, was a priest and a leader of the Pernambucan Revolution of 1817, a revolt against Portuguese colonial rule that was eventually put down. This early exposure to revolutionary politics and the harsh consequences of resistance influenced the younger Abreu e Lima's outlook and his readiness to fight for liberation. After the 1817 revolt failed and his father was executed, young Abreu e Lima left Brazil and eventually made his way to Venezuela, where he joined Simón Bolívar's forces.
