Biography

Juan Orlando Hernández Alvarado was born on October 28, 1968, in Gracias, Honduras. He received his education from both military and civilian schools, starting at Liceo Militar de Honduras and then studying at the Faculty of Legal Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Honduras. He later furthered his studies at the State University of New York at Albany. Hernández began his political career with the National Party and served as president of the National Congress of Honduras from January 2010 to June 2013, when he resigned to focus on his presidential campaign.

Hernández was elected president in 2014 and began his term as the leader of Honduras. His administration was focused on securing re-election, which needed changes to the constitution. The Supreme Court allowed him to run again in April 2015, and he secured victory in the National Party primary in March 2017. The 2017 general election was contentious, with Hernández winning by a narrow margin of 0.5%, amid fraud allegations from the Organization of American States. Nevertheless, the United States recognized his win. He served a second term until 2022, when Xiomara Castro took over the presidency.

During his time in office, Hernández received international accolades such as the Order of Brilliant Jade in 2016. He married Ana Rosalinda García Carías and stayed a significant figure in Honduran politics. On January 27, 2022, the day he left office, he became a member of the Central American Parliament.

After his presidency, Hernández faced serious legal challenges. The U.S. Department of State revoked his visa on July 1, 2021, due to his involvement in corruption and drug trafficking, but this information was not released until February 7, 2022. On February 14, 2022, national police and DEA agents surrounded his home in Tegucigalpa following a U.S. extradition request. He surrendered on February 15, 2022, and was extradited to the United States on April 21, 2022. In 2024, a U.S. court convicted him on drug trafficking charges related to helping transport cocaine to the United States, leading to a 45-year prison sentence.

Before Fame

Hernández grew up during a time of major political and social upheaval in Honduras, influenced by the civil wars in neighboring Central American countries during the 1980s. His military education at the Liceo Militar de Honduras gave him discipline and connections that later became valuable in his political career. The legal training he received at the National Autonomous University of Honduras gave him the skills needed to navigate Honduras's complex political system.

He entered politics when Honduras was dealing with poverty, violence, and weak institutions. The National Party gave him a platform to pursue his political ambitions, and his legal background helped him secure leadership roles within the party. His rise to lead the National Congress made him an important figure in Honduran politics and set the stage for his future presidential campaigns.
