Biography

José Manuel Zelaya Rosales was born on September 20, 1952, in Catacamas, Honduras, in a wealthy business family. Known by his nickname 'Mel,' he first worked in his family's logging and timber businesses before moving into politics. Zelaya was the 35th president of Honduras from 2006 to 2009, representing the Liberal Party. During his presidency, he introduced various social programs and gradually leaned more to the left, teaming up with other leftist leaders in Latin America.

Zelaya's presidency stirred controversy as he sought constitutional reform and aligned Honduras with the Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA), led by Venezuela's Hugo Chávez. His idea for a non-binding referendum on constitutional change caused major political tension with the Honduran Congress, Supreme Court, and military. This crisis peaked on June 28, 2009, when the military ousted him from office and sent him into exile in Costa Rica, in what is known as the 2009 Honduran coup d'état.

After he was removed, Zelaya spent months in exile before making a dramatic return to Honduras in September 2009, seeking refuge in the Brazilian embassy in Tegucigalpa. He stayed there for several months until he was allowed to leave for the Dominican Republic in 2010, where he continued his exile for over a year. During this time, he kept up his political activism and opposed the government that replaced him.

Zelaya eventually came back to Honduras and started the LIBRE (Liberty and Refoundation) party, which became a major opposition group in Honduran politics. His wife, Xiomara Castro, whom he married in 1976, led the party and won the 2021 presidential election. When she took office in 2022, Zelaya became Honduras's first 'First Gentleman,' also serving as a deputy in the Central American Parliament. His political journey has included moving from traditional liberalism to leftist populism, experiencing exile, and returning to influence through his wife's role as president.

Before Fame

Manuel Zelaya grew up as the oldest son of a wealthy businessman in rural eastern Honduras, inheriting both wealth and his father's nickname 'Mel.' He spent his early years learning the family business in logging and timber, which gave him significant economic resources and connections throughout Honduras. This background in natural resources later shaped his views on Honduras's economic challenges and rural development needs.

Before getting into politics, Zelaya was a successful businessman, expanding his family's enterprises while building relationships across various parts of Honduran society. His move from business to politics was part of a larger trend among wealthy Latin American families who used their economic success to gain political influence during the democratic changes of the late 20th century.
