Biography

Eliphalet Remington II was born on October 28, 1793, in Suffield, Connecticut. He grew up in central New York State after his family moved to the Mohawk Valley region. Working with his father, Eliphalet Remington I, he learned blacksmithing, mastering the art of metalworking from a young age. This hands-on education in forging would play a crucial role in his future success in the American firearms industry.

In 1816, when he was about twenty-two, Remington hand-forged his first rifle barrel and walked to a nearby gunsmith to have it rifled. Impressed by his own craftsmanship, he began accepting orders from neighbors and local hunters who admired the precision and durability of his barrels. Starting in his father’s forge near Ilion Gorge, New York, Remington gradually turned his small operation into a more structured manufacturing business. By 1828, he had set up a permanent facility along the Erie Canal, using the waterway to broaden his product distribution.

Remington's business grew significantly through the 1830s and 1840s as the need for reliable firearms increased in the United States. He obtained contracts with the U.S. government to supply military arms, which gave him financial stability and a reputation for quality, attracting civilian customers. His company, initially called E. Remington, was reorganized as E. Remington and Son when his son Philo joined, and later as E. Remington and Sons as more sons joined. This family setup helped maintain control over quality and production.

Throughout his career, Remington was seen not just as a businessman but also as a skilled engineer and inventor who made important contributions to firearms manufacturing. He adopted new industrial techniques, using machinery and precision tools when many competitors still relied mainly on hand craftsmanship. His facility in Ilion, New York, became a major arms manufacturing center, employing hundreds and producing a wide range of firearms and metal goods.

Eliphalet Remington died on August 12, 1861, in Ilion, New York, a town closely connected to his work. He did not live to see the huge growth of his company during and after the Civil War, but the strong base he built allowed that expansion. His sons carried on the business under the Remington name, and the company he started eventually became Remington Arms, one of the oldest and best-known firearms manufacturers in American history.

Before Fame

Eliphalet Remington grew up in the Mohawk Valley of New York, an area actively being settled and developed in the early 1800s. His father ran a forge, and young Eliphalet learned blacksmithing hands-on rather than through formal schooling, gaining skill and patience in working iron—an essential trade for rural communities of that time.

The completion of the Erie Canal in 1825 changed the economic setting of upstate New York. It opened up new markets and allowed manufacturers in the area to efficiently ship goods to faraway customers. Remington started making guns in 1816 to meet the practical need for an affordable rifle, putting him in a great spot to take advantage of these growing commercial networks. His closeness to the canal and his reputation for quality work allowed the small family forge to become a real manufacturing operation over the next two decades.
