Biography
Julian Paul Assange was born on July 3, 1971, in Townsville, Australia. He moved around various places in Australia during his early years before his family eventually settled in Melbourne when he was a teenager. Assange went to Townsville State High School and later attended Central Queensland University and the University of Melbourne. While growing up, he became very interested in computer programming and got involved in the hacker community.
In 1996, Assange was fined by Australian authorities for his hacking activities. This early run-in with the law and technology had a big impact on his future career. He used his technical skills and interest in making information available to the public by founding WikiLeaks in 2006, a platform that publishes classified documents and sensitive information from governments and organizations around the globe.
Assange became famous worldwide in 2010 when WikiLeaks released numerous leaks provided by Chelsea Manning, a U.S. Army intelligence analyst. These leaks included video of a U.S. airstrike in Baghdad that suggested possible war crimes, detailed military logs from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, and thousands of U.S. diplomatic cables. The publications sparked global discussions about government transparency, press freedom, and national security.
In November 2010, Swedish authorities sought to extradite Assange from the United Kingdom for questioning in a police investigation. To avoid extradition, Assange broke his bail conditions in June 2012 and sought asylum at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. Ecuador granted him asylum in August 2012, citing concerns about political persecution and possible extradition to the United States. Assange stayed in the embassy for nearly seven years, continuing his work with WikiLeaks and even starting the WikiLeaks Party in 2013, though he was not successful in his bid for the Australian Senate. Swedish prosecutors eventually dropped their investigation in 2019. During his career, Assange has received several awards recognizing his contributions to journalism and transparency, including the Sam Adams Award, Sydney Peace Prize, and Stuttgart Peace Prize.
Before Fame
Assange's childhood involved moving around Australia frequently, exposing him to different environments and perspectives. His family kept this nomadic lifestyle until they finally settled in Melbourne when he was a teenager, giving him the stability he needed to focus on his education and interests. In the 1990s, as the internet was quickly growing, Assange developed a strong interest in computer technology and programming.
He got deeply involved in Australia's growing hacker culture, which focused on information freedom and questioned traditional power structures. This community valued technical know-how and believed that information should be accessible to everyone. Although his hacking activities led to legal issues, they gave him the technical skills and philosophical beliefs that later shaped his views on information transparency and his creation of WikiLeaks.
