Biography
Karen Vilhelmi Karapetyan was born on August 14, 1963, in Khankendi, a city in the Nagorno-Karabakh region. He attended Yerevan State University, where he built the academic background that later led him into economics and public administration. Over the years, Karapetyan became a notable figure in post-Soviet Armenian politics, connecting the energy sector with government roles.
Before stepping into public office, Karapetyan held leadership positions at major energy companies, including within Gazprom. This experience in the energy field earned him a reputation as a practical administrator skilled in handling large commercial and infrastructural operations. His work in the private and semi-public energy sector paved the way for high-level government appointments.
Karapetyan was the Mayor of Yerevan, Armenia's capital, from 2010 to 2011. Although his time as mayor was short, it marked his entry into public office and urban governance in a post-Soviet capital. After his mayoral stint, he returned to the energy sector before re-joining the national government.
On September 13, 2016, President Serzh Sargsyan appointed Karapetyan as Prime Minister of Armenia, a role he held until April 9, 2018. His work focused on economic reform, attracting investment, and improving administrative efficiency. Following Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan's resignation during the Velvet Revolution protests, Karapetyan became first deputy prime minister on April 17, 2018, and later acting prime minister on April 23, 2018. He held this acting position until Nikol Pashinyan was elected prime minister on May 8, 2018, ending his time in the executive branch.
