Karolos Papoulias was a Greek politician and diplomat who was the sixth President of Greece from 2005 to 2015. Born on June 4, 1929, in Ioannina, his early interest in law and international relations shaped his career. He studied at the Zosimaia School and furthered his education at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the University of Milan, and the University of Cologne, specializing in legal and diplomatic fields.
Papoulias was a member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and held key ministerial roles before becoming president. He served as Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1985 to 1989 and again from 1993 to 1996, playing a critical role in Greece's foreign policy during the post-Cold War era and managing complex international relationships in the Balkans and Europe.
His diplomatic career brought him recognition from many countries and international bodies. He received honors like the Order of the White Eagle, the Order of the Elephant from Denmark in 2006, the Grand Order of King Tomislav from Croatia in 2007, and the Royal Order of the Seraphim from Sweden in 2008. He also received the Knight Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic and the Grand Star of the Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria.
Papoulias's presidency covered a decade of significant challenges for Greece, including the financial crisis starting in 2008. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from Mariupol State University for his academic contributions.
