Biography
Giannis Sina Ougko Antetokounmpo, born December 6, 1994, is a Greek and Nigerian basketball player known as one of the NBA's most dominant players. Born in Athens to Nigerian parents, he started with the youth teams of Filathlitikos before moving to pro basketball and later joining the NBA. The Milwaukee Bucks picked him 15th overall in the 2013 draft.
Nicknamed the "Greek Freak" for his size, speed, and strength, Antetokounmpo quickly became a standout in the NBA. He showed his unique talent during the 2016-17 season when he led the Bucks in all five major statistical categories. He was the first in NBA history to finish a regular season in the top 20 for total points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocks. This earned him the NBA Most Improved Player award in 2017.
Antetokounmpo continued to rise with back-to-back NBA Most Valuable Player awards in 2019 and 2020. He became one of just three players to win two MVPs before turning 26, along with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and LeBron James. His 2020 season was especially noteworthy as he also won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon in winning both honors in the same season.
The high point of Antetokounmpo's career came in 2021 when he led the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA championship since 1971 and earned Finals MVP honors. His playoff and Finals performances cemented his place among the NBA's best. He has been selected for the NBA All-Star Game ten times and has been an All-Star captain several times, often topping the Eastern Conference in fan votes. In 2021, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, honoring the greatest players in the league's history.
Before Fame
Born to Nigerian immigrant parents in Athens, Greece, Antetokounmpo grew up facing poverty and legal residency challenges. His parents, Charles and Veronica, had moved from Nigeria looking for better opportunities but struggled to establish themselves in Greece. Despite these hardships, Giannis and his brothers found hope and opportunity in basketball.
Antetokounmpo started playing organized basketball with the youth teams of Filathlitikos, a local club in Athens, where his remarkable physical abilities and quick development caught the eye of scouts. Despite his brief amateur career, he made a strong enough impression to consider a professional future. By 2011, he had joined Filathlitikos's senior team, and his performances there gained international attention, eventually leading to his entry into the 2013 NBA draft, despite having less exposure to high-level competition than most NBA prospects.
