Biography

Kelechi Promise Iheanacho was born on October 3, 1996, in Owerri, Nigeria. As a professional footballer playing as a forward, he has built a career in top competitions in England and Scotland, and has consistently represented the Nigeria national team at both youth and senior levels. Known for his finishing and technical skill, Iheanacho is regarded as one of the most effective Nigerian attackers of his generation.

Iheanacho started his senior club career at Manchester City, making his debut during the 2015-16 season. That season, he helped the club win the Football League Cup, gaining attention as a young striker who could perform under pressure. His performances drew significant interest, and in 2017, he moved to Leicester City for a reported fee of £25 million, then the highest ever for a Nigerian player and the second-highest for any African player, only surpassed by the fee for Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah.

At Leicester City, Iheanacho played a key role in some of the club's memorable moments. His most notable contributions were during the 2020-21 FA Cup, where he scored four goals in the competition, tying for the highest total that year. Leicester won the FA Cup that season, the first time the club had ever claimed the trophy. He added to his achievements by scoring the only goal from a penalty as Leicester beat Manchester City in the 2021 FA Community Shield, adding another trophy to his record.

Internationally, Iheanacho first gained attention playing for Nigeria's under-17 team at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup. He was named the tournament's best player and was the second-highest goalscorer, helping Nigeria win their fourth title in the competition. He later played for Nigeria's under-20 team at the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup before earning his first senior international cap that same year. His senior career includes appearances at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations in both 2021 and 2023, where Nigeria finished second in 2023. He was named Most Promising African Talent in 2013 and 2016 and was included as a substitute in the 2016 CAF Team of the Year.

After his time at Leicester City, Iheanacho joined Celtic in the Scottish Premiership, continuing his career at a club known for its strong tradition in European football. His move marked a new chapter following several years in the Premier League.

Before Fame

Kelechi Iheanacho grew up in Owerri, the capital of Imo State in southeastern Nigeria, an area known for turning out talented footballers. Nigeria had a strong youth football setup throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, with the country's under-17 program achieving repeated success at FIFA's global youth competitions. Through this system, Iheanacho honed his skills, training in an environment supported by Nigeria's history of competing in top youth football.

He gained international attention at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the United Arab Emirates when he was sixteen. His standout performances in that tournament caught the eye of clubs across Europe, and he eventually signed with Manchester City's development academy before moving up to senior professional football.
