Biography

Kelvin Kiptum Cheruiyot was a Kenyan long-distance runner who brought a new level of achievement to marathon running during his short but remarkable career. Born on December 2, 1999, in Chepkorio, Kenya, Kiptum quickly became one of the top marathon runners in history, achieving remarkable success in just three professional marathon races between December 2022 and October 2023. His rapid rise peaked with setting the marathon world record of 2:00:35 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon, beating the previous record by 34 seconds. Kiptum's career took off with an impressive debut at the 2022 Valencia Marathon, where he set the fastest marathon debut time and became only the third man ever to run under 2 hours and 2 minutes. This performance quickly made him a major player in elite marathon running. Just four months later, at the 2023 London Marathon, he ran the second-fastest marathon ever with a time of 2:01:25, just 16 seconds shy of the then-world record. His consistency at the top level was unmatched, as he won all three marathons he entered and set course records of under 2 hours and 2 minutes at each event. At the time of his death, Kiptum held three of the seven fastest marathon times in history and was regarded as the world's top men's marathon runner. His world record was officially recognized by World Athletics on February 6, 2024, just five days before he tragically passed away. Kiptum's life ended on February 11, 2024, when he died in a car accident in Kaptagat, a rural Kenyan area known for training long-distance runners. According to local police reports, Kiptum lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a tree. His coach also died in the accident. Even though his time in elite competition was brief, Kiptum's impact on marathon running was significant, showing that there were still new limits to be reached in the 26.2-mile distance.

Before Fame

Born in Chepkorio, a small town in Kenya's Rift Valley, Kiptum grew up in a region known for world-class distance runners. The high altitude and strong local running culture were perfect for developing long-distance athletes. Like many Kenyan runners, Kiptum probably started running at a young age, though there aren't many details about his early training. His rise to elite competition was quick, as he went from being relatively unknown to international stardom just months after his professional marathon debut in late 2022.
