Biography

Begum Khaleda Zia (15 August 1946 – 30 December 2025) was a significant figure in Bangladeshi politics. She served two terms as Prime Minister, from 1991 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006, becoming the first woman to hold this position in Bangladesh and the second in any Muslim-majority country after Benazir Bhutto. Born as Khaleda Khanam in Jalpaiguri, she moved with her family to East Bengal in 1950. She married Ziaur Rahman, who later became President of Bangladesh and played a key role in the country's fight for independence.

In the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, Khaleda Zia and her sons were detained by Pakistani forces after her husband joined the Mukti Bahini freedom fighters. She was the First Lady of Bangladesh from 1977 until Ziaur Rahman was assassinated in 1981, which triggered her political career. After his death, she became a leading figure in the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in 1984 and led it until her passing in 2025.

As the leader of the BNP, Khaleda Zia was outspoken against military rule, particularly during Hussain Muhammad Ershad's time in power. She led the boycott of the 1986 and 1988 elections and, together with Sheikh Hasina of the Awami League, was instrumental in the 1990 movement that brought democracy back to Bangladesh. Her first term as Prime Minister began after the BNP won the 1991 elections and included notable reforms in education, the economy, and administration.

Her second term, starting in 2001, was characterized by economic growth, with increases in GDP, foreign investment, and female literacy. However, this time was also shadowed by concerns over corruption, as Bangladesh was ranked as the most corrupt country by the Corruption Perceptions Index. Her premiership ended in 2006 during a political crisis that resulted in military intervention in 2007. She received Bangladesh's highest civilian honor, the Independence Award, and passed away at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on 30 December 2025.

Before Fame

Khaleda Khanam was born in Jalpaiguri in 1946, when the Indian subcontinent was still under British rule. Her Bengali Muslim family moved to East Bengal (later Bangladesh) in 1950, three years after India was divided into East and West Pakistan. She grew up at a time when Bengali nationalism and cultural identity were becoming stronger in East Pakistan.

She entered public life after marrying Ziaur Rahman, a military officer who played a key role in Bangladesh's fight for independence. Initially, she lived as a military wife, but her political awareness grew during the 1971 Liberation War, when she saw the Pakistani military's brutal actions up close. When her husband became President, she became the First Lady. After his assassination in 1981, she went from being a political widow to becoming a leader determined to carry on his legacy with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
