Biography

Lech Aleksander Kaczyński (18 June 1949 – 10 April 2010) was a Polish politician, legal scholar, and trade union activist who was the 4th President of Poland from 2005 until he died in the Smolensk air disaster on 10 April 2010. Born in Warsaw, he studied at XXXIX LO im. Lotnictwa Polskiego and XLI Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Joachima Lelewela w Warszawie before graduating from the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw. He earned his PhD from Gdańsk University in 1980 and completed his habilitation in labor and employment law in 1990, later teaching at Gdańsk University and Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw. He was married to Maria Kaczyńska, who also died in the Smolensk disaster.

Kaczyński's political career grew from Poland's anti-communist movement. During the communist era, he was an activist with the Workers' Defence Committee and advised the Inter-Enterprise Strike Committee at the Gdańsk Shipyard in August 1980, helping to start the Solidarity trade union movement. After martial law was declared in December 1981, he was detained by the authorities as an anti-socialist element. Once released, he continued underground activities with Solidarity and later advised Lech Wałęsa, taking part in the Polish Round Table Talks from February to April 1989.

After Solidarity's victory in the 1989 elections, Kaczyński was a senator and vice-chairman of the movement before being elected to the Sejm in 1991 as an independent. He was President of the Supreme Audit Office from 1992 to 1995, and later Minister of Justice and Public Prosecutor General in Jerzy Buzek's cabinet from 2000 until his dismissal in July 2001. He was elected Mayor of Warsaw in 2002 and held this position until 2005, when he won the presidential election.

As President, Kaczyński focused on Polish sovereignty, Euro-Atlantic integration, and strongly supported pro-democratic movements in Eastern Europe, especially in Ukraine and Georgia. He received many state honors during his presidency, including the Order of the White Eagle in 2005 and the Grand Cross with Collar of the Order of Vytautas the Great in 2009. He died with 95 other Polish officials when their plane crashed near Smolensk, Russia, on 10 April 2010, while going to a ceremony commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.

Before Fame

Lech Kaczyński was born on June 18, 1949, in Warsaw, in a Poland still recovering from World War II and under a Soviet-backed communist government. He and his identical twin brother, Jarosław, acted together as children in the 1962 Polish movie The Two Who Stole the Moon, but neither of them pursued acting. He went to secondary school in Warsaw and then studied at the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Warsaw, which prepared him for his future in academics and politics.

He became well-known through Poland's underground opposition networks in the 1970s and 1980s. Kaczyński was part of the pro-democratic Workers' Defence Committee during the late communist era, and his legal skills made him a valuable adviser to striking workers at the Gdańsk Shipyard in 1980. Being imprisoned under martial law in 1981 strengthened his dedication to democratic change, and his continued secret activism through the mid-1980s made him a trusted figure within Solidarity by the time the movement re-emerged as a legal political force at the end of the decade.
