Biography
Ana Lila Downs Sánchez was born on September 9, 1968, in Oaxaca, Mexico, to a Scottish-American father and a Mixtec mother. This diverse background greatly influenced her art and music throughout her career. Growing up in Oaxaca, she was surrounded by the indigenous languages and traditional music of the region, especially Mixtec culture from her mother's side. She became fluent in Spanish, English, and Mixtec, which later set her apart in the international music scene.
Downs initially studied at the Institute of Arts by Oaxaca, then attended the University of Minnesota, and also studied at DePaul University. However, she chose to leave formal education to focus completely on her music career. This decision led her to dive into the traditional music scene of Oaxaca City, where she began performing and developing her unique style that later gained international acclaim.
Her recording career began in 1994 with the independent release of her first album, "Ofrenda." Her 1999 debut studio album "La sandunga" really made an impact, marking her as an important voice in Latin American music. The album was both critically and commercially successful, blending traditional Mexican folk music with contemporary styles. Her big international break came in 2001 with the album "Border," which secured her place in the Mexican and Latin American music scenes of the early 2000s.
Throughout her career, Downs has released many albums that show her commitment to preserving and revitalizing indigenous Mexican music. Her 2011 album "Pecados y milagros" was a major commercial hit, topping charts in key markets and establishing her as a leading figure in world music. She followed this with "Balas y Chocolate" in 2015 and "Salón Lágrimas y Deseo" in 2017, the latter winning her a Latin Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Pop Vocal Album. Her work often includes songs performed in indigenous languages like Mixtec, Zapotec, Mayan, Nahuatl, and Purépecha, showing her dedication to cultural preservation. She is married to Paul Cohen and has received many honors, including the Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres from France and an honorary doctorate from Berklee College of Music.
Before Fame
Before gaining international fame, Lila Downs was deeply connected to the cultural traditions of Oaxaca, where she was born to parents from very different backgrounds. Her Scottish-American father and Mixtec mother gave her a unique bicultural outlook that later became a key part of her artistic identity. During her early years, she showed vocal talent and performed in school, blending traditional music with Latin and American influences while developing her own unique performance style.
Her journey into the music world began with formal education at places like the University of Minnesota and DePaul University. However, her love for music eventually led her to leave her studies and return to Oaxaca, where she got involved in the local traditional music scene. This move was pivotal, as it helped her develop her distinct style and build relationships within the indigenous music community that shaped her entire career.
