Biography
Luka Modrić, born September 9, 1985, in Zadar, Croatia, is a professional footballer who plays as a central midfielder and leads the Croatia national team. Now playing for Serie A club AC Milan, he is widely considered one of the best midfielders ever and the top Croatian player in history. His skills, vision, and leadership have set the standard for midfield play for over a decade.
Modrić started his professional career with Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb in 2003, initially going on loan to Zrinjski Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Inter Zaprešić in Croatia. After debuting for Dinamo in 2005, his standout performances gained international attention, leading to a move to Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur in 2008. At Spurs, he played a key role in the team's success, helping them qualify for the UEFA Champions League in 2010 for the first time in nearly 50 years.
In 2012, Real Madrid signed Modrić for £30 million, where he found unprecedented success. Under Zinedine Zidane from 2016, Modrić was central to Madrid's dominance in European football, contributing to three consecutive Champions League wins from 2015-16 to 2017-18. His time at Real Madrid resulted in 28 major trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, and two Copa del Rey wins, making him the most decorated player in the club's history. He left Madrid in July 2025, joining AC Milan on a free transfer.
The 2018 season was the peak of Modrić's individual recognition. He was the first player since 2007 to break the Messi-Ronaldo streak by winning the Ballon d'Or and also claimed the FIFA World Player of the Year and UEFA Men's Player of the Year awards. His international career peaked during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he led Croatia to their first-ever final, earning the tournament's Golden Ball as the best player. His many honors include six FIFPRO World 11 selections, three UEFA Team of the Year selections, and the 2019 Golden Foot award, solidifying his place among football's top performers.
Before Fame
Growing up in Zadar during Croatia's challenging early years as a new independent nation, Modrić faced significant difficulties in his youth. The Croatian War of Independence disrupted his childhood, and his family went through displacement and hardship. Despite these obstacles, his football talent showed early on, and he joined local youth academies before eventually entering Dinamo Zagreb's system.
Pursuing professional football in Croatia during the early 2000s required persistence and adaptability. Modrić's initial loan periods at smaller clubs were common for young Croatian players, allowing them to gain experience before moving into top-tier football. His breakthrough at Dinamo Zagreb happened as Croatian football was gaining a reputation for producing technically skilled players who would succeed in Europe's major leagues.
