Biography
Maia Sandu, born on May 24, 1972, in Risipeni (then part of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic), studied at the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova and the Academy of Public Administration of Moldova, and later at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Her education in economics and public policy influenced her reform-driven governance and focus on institutional accountability.
Sandu started her career in international development and public administration, later moving into politics. She was Moldova's Minister of Education from 2012 to 2015, working to cut corruption in university admissions and modernize education. In 2015, she won the GPSA Award for Leadership in Social Accountability for her transparency efforts. She served in the Moldovan Parliament from 2014 to 2015 and again in 2019, and in 2016, founded the Party of Action and Solidarity, a pro-European, anti-corruption political party that supported her political campaigns.
In June 2019, Sandu became Prime Minister of Moldova after a political crisis unseated the dominant Democratic Party. Her government lasted until November 2019, when it fell due to a no-confidence vote by opposing parties. Despite this brief term, her time in office boosted her national and international visibility. She ran for president in November 2020, defeating incumbent Igor Dodon in a runoff election, becoming Moldova's first female president. She took office in December 2020.
As president, Sandu has prioritized European integration. Under her leadership, Moldova applied for and achieved EU candidate status in June 2022, striving for this despite internal opposition and external pressure from Russia. She has consistently criticized Russia's invasion of Ukraine that started in February 2022, showing support for Ukraine and working to lessen Moldova's reliance on Russia for energy and economic needs. In February 2023, she accused Russia of attempting a coup against Moldova's government. In 2024, she was re-elected for a second term as president, in an election noted for a constitutional referendum on EU membership and significant Russian interference. Her international recognitions include the Order of Labour 1st class, the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise 1st class, and the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honour, awarded in 2024.
Before Fame
Maia Sandu grew up in Risipeni during the last years of the Soviet Union, experiencing Moldova's transition from a Soviet republic to an independent state. The political and economic upheaval of the 1990s, with the collapse of Soviet institutions and the tough shift to a market economy, set the stage for her studies in economics and public administration in Chisinau.
After graduating from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Sandu worked with the World Bank and in public administration roles in Moldova, gaining experience in education policy and governance reform. Her time as Minister of Education, starting in 2012, brought her more public attention, especially for her strong stance against deep-rooted corruption in the country's educational institutions. This reputation for principled reform paved the way for her to found the Party of Action and Solidarity in 2016 and eventually become president.
