Biography

Mamadou Sakho, born on 13 February 1990 in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, is a French former professional footballer known for playing as a centre-back. He started his professional journey at Paris FC and then joined Paris Saint-Germain's youth academy in 2002, developing into one of the top defenders of his time. Sakho made a mark in October 2007 at PSG by becoming the youngest player to captain a Ligue 1 club on his league debut, showing his talent and leadership at just 17.

At Paris Saint-Germain, Sakho became a key player in the defense, making over 200 appearances and helping the club win all four major domestic trophies in French football. His strong performances caught international attention, leading to his transfer to Liverpool in 2013 for £18 million. At Liverpool, he continued to show his defensive skills in the Premier League, although his time there included both good performances and some controversies. In 2017, he moved to Crystal Palace, first on loan and then permanently for £26 million in September.

Sakho also had a notable international career, playing for France at all youth levels before making his senior debut in 2010 against England. He earned 29 caps for France and was part of the 2014 FIFA World Cup squad in Brazil. His leadership was a constant throughout his international career, as he captained France at various youth levels before becoming a regular senior team member.

Later in his career, Sakho returned to French football, joining Montpellier on a free transfer in July 2021. However, his time there ended suddenly in November 2023 after a physical altercation with manager Michel Der Zakarian. In the final steps of his playing career, he moved to Georgia to play for Torpedo Kutaisi, bringing his wide-ranging experience to a new football setting before retiring from professional football.

Before Fame

Growing up in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, a multicultural area, Sakho was introduced to football at a young age. He started playing organized football with Paris FC's youth system, where scouts noticed his natural defensive skills and physical abilities. Moving to Paris Saint-Germain's academy in 2002 was a big step forward for him, as PSG was becoming one of France's top clubs.

The early 2000s were a time of change for French football, with France having won the 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Championship. This success led to more investment in youth development programs, and academies like PSG's played a key role in developing young French talent. Sakho benefited from this focus on youth development, rising quickly through the ranks to eventually make his record-breaking debut as the youngest Ligue 1 captain.
