Biography

Paul Barthélemy Biya, born Biya'a bi Mvondo on February 13, 1933, in Mvomeka'a, Cameroon, has been the second President of Cameroon since 1982, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. Originally from Cameroon's southern region, Biya studied in France at the École nationale d'administration, Sciences Po, and the University of Paris, where he received the administrative and political training that would shape his government career.

Biya's political career took off during Ahmadou Ahidjo's presidency, where he quickly proved himself as an effective administrator. From 1968 to 1975, he was the Secretary-General of the Presidency, a role that put him in the middle of Cameroon's government operations. His efficiency and loyalty to President Ahidjo led to his appointment as Prime Minister in 1975, a position he held until 1982. During this period, Biya gained a lot of experience in economic policy and administrative reform, and became Ahidjo's most trusted aide.

Biya's unexpected rise to the presidency happened in November 1982 when President Ahidjo resigned and named Biya as his constitutional successor. However, the smooth transfer of power didn't last long, as conflicts arose between the former and current presidents over the extent of Biya's authority. These tensions led to a staged coup attempt in 1983-1984, which Biya managed to suppress while using the situation to eliminate political rivals and tighten his grip on the government and military.

During the 1980s, Biya made some political reforms while keeping Cameroon's one-party system. As democratic movements gained momentum in the early 1990s, both domestically and internationally, he reluctantly agreed to allow multiparty politics. Despite this move towards democratization, Biya has kept authoritarian control through successive election wins in 1992, 1997, 2004, 2011, 2018, and 2025. International observers and opposition groups have frequently accused these elections of irregularities and systemic fraud, especially the controversial 1992 election where he won with only 40% of the vote. His long time in office has been marked by economic struggles, regional security challenges, and ongoing criticism from human rights organizations about press freedom, political opposition, and governance practices.

Before Fame

Born into a modest family in Mvomeka'a village in Cameroon's South Region, Biya was part of the Bulu ethnic group and grew up in a Catholic home. His strong academic performance allowed him to study in France in the 1950s, where he focused on public administration and political science at some of France's top schools. This kind of French education was common among the rising African political leaders during the post-colonial period.

When he returned to Cameroon in the early 1960s, shortly after the country gained independence in 1960, Biya joined the civil service as the new nation was establishing its administrative framework. His fluency in both French and English, along with his European education and administrative abilities, made him a valuable asset to President Ahmadou Ahidjo's government, which was working to unite the former French and British colonial regions into a single nation.
