Manuel Bretón de los Herreros was born on December 19, 1796, in Quel, a small town in La Rioja, Spain. He became one of the most prolific and celebrated Spanish dramatists of the nineteenth century, producing a large number of theatrical works that were popular on Madrid stages for several decades.
