Biography
Marine Le Pen was born on August 5, 1968, in Neuilly-sur-Seine, France, into a well-known political family. Her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, started the National Front party in 1972, setting up a far-right political path that strongly influenced her career. She studied law at Panthéon-Assas University, became a lawyer focusing on criminal defense and family law, and then moved into politics.
Le Pen's political journey began in the 1990s, starting as a legal advisor for the National Front. She was elected to regional councils and gradually took on more roles within the party. In the 2000s, she pushed to modernize and rebrand the party, moving away from some of her father's more controversial stances while keeping a focus on nationalism and anti-immigration.
In 2011, Le Pen took over as president of the National Front, marking a generational change in French far-right politics. She introduced a "dédiabolisation" strategy, aiming to make the party more acceptable to mainstream voters by softening its image. This involved expelling her father from the party in 2015 due to disagreements over his Holocaust comments, showing her desire to reshape the party.
Her presidential runs in 2012, 2017, and 2022 were key moments in her career. In 2017, she made it to the second round but lost to Emmanuel Macron, still gathering over 10 million votes. Her 2022 campaign saw her get over 13 million votes against Macron, her best showing yet. Between these campaigns, she served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2004 to 2017, where she pushed for French sovereignty and Eurosceptic views.
In 2018, Le Pen changed the National Front's name to National Rally (Rassemblement National), highlighting her efforts to update the party's image. As leader, she has consistently focused on immigration limits, economic protectionism, and preserving French culture, while advocating for France to leave NATO's integrated command and renegotiate EU treaties.
Before Fame
Marine Le Pen grew up steeped in politics as the daughter of Jean-Marie Le Pen, who started the National Front in 1972. Her early years were filled with political drama and personal difficulties, including a bomb attack on their home in 1976 and her parents' divorce in 1987. Despite this, she pursued a law degree, graduating from Panthéon-Assas University.
Before jumping into politics, Le Pen worked as a lawyer in Paris, focused on criminal defense and family law. This career gave her experience outside politics and honed her rhetorical skills, which helped her later in politics. She began actively engaging in politics by working as a legal advisor to the National Front in the 1990s, using her legal background and family ties to carve out her place within the party.
