Biography

Valdis Dombrovskis was born on August 5, 1971, in Riga, Latvia, during the Soviet era. He studied physics and economics at the University of Latvia, Riga Technical University, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, and the University of Maryland, which later helped him as a technocratic politician and policymaker.

Dombrovskis got into Latvian politics in the early 2000s, and was the Minister of Finance from 2002 to 2004, a key time for Latvia's post-independence economic growth and preparations to join the European Union. After his time as minister, he served as a Member of the European Parliament for the New Era Party from 2004 to 2009, gaining valuable experience in European Union institutions and policy-making.

In 2009, Dombrovskis became Prime Minister of Latvia during a challenging time. He led the country through the global financial crisis and the European debt crisis, enforcing strict austerity measures and reforms as part of a bailout from the International Monetary Fund and European Union. His administration successfully introduced the euro in 2014, though he resigned as Prime Minister later that year after a supermarket roof collapse in Riga that killed 54 people.

After his time as Prime Minister, Dombrovskis took on senior roles within the European Commission. He was Vice-President for the Euro and Social Dialogue from 2014 to 2019, and then Executive Vice-President for An Economy that Works for People from 2019 to 2024. He also held the portfolio for Financial Stability, Financial Services and Capital Markets Union from 2016 to 2020, and became Commissioner for Trade in 2020 after Phil Hogan resigned. Currently, he is the European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, and Commissioner for Implementation and Simplification, continuing to influence European economic policy and governance.

Before Fame

Growing up in Soviet-occupied Latvia, Dombrovskis experienced a time of major political and economic change. He saw Latvia's push for independence in the late 1980s and early 1990s while he was studying. His education showed the opportunities open to promising students in the newly independent nation, including the chance to study abroad in Germany and the United States, where he learned about Western economic ideas and democratic governance.

The 1990s in Latvia saw a quick shift from a planned to a market economy, large privatization programs, and preparation for joining the European Union. These changes provided chances for young, educated individuals like Dombrovskis to get involved in politics and help build new institutions. His background in both physics and economics made him well-suited for the technical side of economic policy and European integration that were key in Latvian politics in the early 2000s.
