Biography

Mark Richard Shuttleworth was born on September 18, 1973, in Welkom, South Africa. He went to Western Province Preparatory School and later attended Rondebosch Boys' High School and Diocesan College. He also spent some time at Brooks School before finishing his higher education at the University of Cape Town, where he studied finance and information systems.

Shuttleworth started his entrepreneurial career in the mid-1990s by founding Thawte Consulting, an internet security company focused on digital certificates and authentication services. The company grew quickly during the early days of e-commerce, meeting the rising need for secure online transactions. In December 1999, Shuttleworth sold Thawte to VeriSign for about $575 million, making him one of South Africa's most successful technology entrepreneurs by age 26.

With his new wealth, Shuttleworth pursued his childhood dream of space travel. He trained extensively in Star City, Russia, and on April 25, 2002, launched aboard Soyuz TM-34 to the International Space Station. During his eight-day mission, he worked on scientific experiments involving AIDS and genome research, becoming the first African to travel to space and the second self-funded space tourist after Dennis Tito.

After returning from space, Shuttleworth founded Canonical Ltd in 2004 and launched Ubuntu, a free and open-source Linux-based operating system. Ubuntu was created to make Linux more user-friendly, with an easy-to-use interface and regular updates. As CEO, he led Ubuntu to become one of the most popular Linux distributions globally, used by millions, including schools and businesses. The operating system has been especially significant in cloud computing and server environments.

Shuttleworth has both South African and British citizenship. In 2010, he received an honorary doctorate for his contributions to technology and space exploration. By the 2020 Sunday Times Rich List, his net worth was estimated at £500 million, showing his ongoing success in technology through Canonical and various investments and ventures in the open-source software world.

Before Fame

Growing up in South Africa during the 1980s and 1990s, Shuttleworth saw the country's shift to democracy and developed an early interest in computers and technology. He attended top South African schools, which gave him strong technical and business skills.

The growth of the internet and e-commerce in the 1990s offered new opportunities for young entrepreneurs with tech skills. Shuttleworth saw how crucial internet security was as online shopping took off, so he started Thawte Consulting in his early twenties during the dot-com boom.
