Matias Aires Ramos da Silva de Eça was born on March 27, 1705, in São Paulo, in what was then the Portuguese colony of Brazil. He moved to Portugal in late 1716 when he was about eleven years old. This move began his lifelong commitment to European philosophy and literature, which heavily influenced his career as a thinker and writer.

Matias Aires came to Portugal as a child and was educated like many from the colonial elite of his era. He studied law at the University of Coimbra's Law School, one of the oldest and most respected schools in the Portuguese-speaking world.
