Biography
Mbwana Ally Samatta was born on 23 December 1992 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He started playing football as a youth with Tanzanian club African Lyon in 2008, showing early skill that caught the eye of bigger clubs in Africa. By 2010, he had turned professional with Simba Sports Club, a well-known team in Tanzania, before quickly moving to TP Mazembe, a major club in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. His five years with Mazembe laid the groundwork for his professional success.
At TP Mazembe, Samatta became one of the top strikers in African club football. The 2015 season was particularly notable: he was named the African-based Player of the Year, ended as the top scorer in the CAF Champions League, and played a key role in Mazembe's victory in the competition. These achievements got the attention of European clubs and showed that he was ready to move beyond Africa.
In January 2016, Samatta joined Belgian First Division A team KRC Genk. His time in Belgium saw him rise steadily in European football. He helped Genk qualify for the UEFA Europa League and during the 2018–19 season, he scored 20 goals to help the club win the Belgian Pro League title, finishing as the league's top scorer. This successful season earned him the Ebony Shoe award, given to the best African player in the Belgian top league. His impressive performances at Genk proved he was ready for top-level European football.
In January 2020, Samatta moved to Aston Villa in the English Premier League, becoming the first Tanzanian to play and score in the Premier League. His goal, a header in a League Cup semi-final, along with his league appearances, marked a significant achievement for him and Tanzanian football. After his time at Aston Villa, he played for other clubs before joining French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, where he continues his career as a striker. Throughout his club career, Samatta has also been the captain of the Tanzania national team, representing his country proudly on the international stage.
Before Fame
Mbwana Samatta grew up in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's largest city and commercial hub. In Tanzania, football is the most popular sport, but the country lacks the infrastructure to produce elite professional players like the traditional football powerhouses do. Samatta joined African Lyon as a youth player in 2008, working his way through the grassroots level of Tanzanian football when very few players from the country had managed to establish solid careers in Europe's top leagues.
His move from Simba Sports Club to TP Mazembe in the Democratic Republic of Congo showed a common path for talented East and Central African players looking for tougher competition. TP Mazembe, with significant resources and regular participation in continental competitions, provided Samatta with the opportunity to develop his skills against stronger opponents. It also helped him improve his finishing and understand the tactical demands needed for a career at the top level of the game.
