Biography

Mohammad-Ali Rajai was an Iranian politician and educator who became the second President of Iran during a difficult time in the nation's history. Born on June 15, 1933, in Qazvin, he studied at Kharazmi University and started his career as a teacher before moving into politics. His political career took off after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, as he became a key figure in the new Islamic Republic's government.

Rajai first became well-known nationally when he was appointed Prime Minister under President Abolhassan Banisadr in 1981. His time as Prime Minister was marked by major political tensions and struggles for power within the revolutionary government. He also served as Foreign Affairs Minister from March 11, 1981, to August 15, 1981, showing his important role in the post-revolutionary administration. His dual roles highlighted the trust the Islamic Republic's leaders had in him during a critical time of institutional change.

After political disagreements led to Banisadr being removed from office, Rajai was elected as Iran's second President on August 2, 1981. His campaign and win happened during a time of serious internal political turmoil and external pressures on the young Islamic Republic. However, his presidency was very short, lasting only four weeks before he was assassinated.

On August 30, 1981, Rajai was killed in a bombing in Tehran along with Prime Minister Mohammad-Javad Bahonar. The attack happened during a government meeting and was blamed on opposition groups trying to destabilize the Islamic Republic's government. This tragic event removed two of Iran's top officials at once, leading to a major leadership crisis. Rajai was survived by his wife, Ateghe Sedighi, and his death was one of the most shocking political assassinations in Iran's recent history, occurring during an already unstable period for the country's politics.

Before Fame

Mohammad-Ali Rajai started out as a teacher after finishing his studies at Kharazmi University. His time in education influenced how he approached his roles in public service and politics. In the 1970s, he got involved in activities opposing the Pahlavi monarchy and joined Islamic revolutionary movements, which eventually led to the 1979 revolution.

The Islamic Revolution of 1979 opened doors for politically active educators and religious figures to take on leadership positions in the new government. Rajai's mix of teaching experience and revolutionary background helped him fit well in the post-revolution political scene. His climb up the ranks in the Islamic Republic’s government showed the preference for people who had opposed the old regime and had practical administrative skills.
