Biography

Muhammad az-Zanati, a Libyan politician, was born in 1937 in Sirte, the coastal city on the Gulf of Sidra that later became closely linked to the Gaddafi regime. He belonged to the Qadhadhfa branch of the Houara tribe, which was the same broader kinship network as Muammar Gaddafi, helping him rise in the Libyan Jamahiriya system. He studied at the Mohammed bin Ali Al Sunoussi Islamic University, which focused on Islamic scholarship and was named after the founder of the Senussi movement, an important influence on Libyan religious and political identity in the twentieth century.

Before Fame

Az-Zanati grew up during a significant period of change in Libya. He saw the last years of the Senussi monarchy under King Idris, before Gaddafi's coup in September 1969 transformed the country. His tribal ties and education helped him connect with influential groups in the new government. He built his career by working within the complicated system of "people's committees" and congresses Gaddafi used to control political power. Over the years, az-Zanati gained a lot of experience in the workings of the Libyan government and eventually held its highest official positions.
