Biography

Kyriakos Mitsotakis is a Greek politician who has been Prime Minister of Greece since July 2019, leading the center-right New Democracy party. Born on March 4, 1968, in Athens, he's from a well-known political family, being the son of former Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis, who led Greece from 1990 to 1993. Mitsotakis got an international education, attending Athens College, then Harvard University and Stanford University, and later Harvard Business School where he won the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize for academic excellence.

Mitsotakis began his political career in 2004 when he was first elected to the Hellenic Parliament representing the Athens B constituency. Early in his career, he was Minister of Administrative Reform from 2013 to 2015 under the New Democracy government. After the party lost elections in 2015, Mitsotakis ran for party leader and was elected president of New Democracy in January 2016. As Leader of the Opposition from 2016 to 2019, he worked to rebuild the party and offer a new vision for Greece.

The 2019 Greek legislative election was a turning point for Mitsotakis, as he led New Democracy to a strong parliamentary majority. His first term as Prime Minister focused on modernizing Greece's public administration with digital initiatives and economic reforms. His leadership faced the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, which required public health measures and economic support. The Economist named Greece the Top Economic Performer for 2022, highlighting the country's economic recovery under his leadership.

After the May 2023 parliamentary election didn't result in a clear winner, Mitsotakis called for snap elections in June 2023. During this time, Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou appointed Ioannis Sarmas as caretaker prime minister. Mitsotakis led New Democracy to another parliamentary majority in the June 2023 election and began his second term as Prime Minister. His leadership style is described as pro-European and technocratic, focusing on structural reforms and fiscal responsibility while navigating Greece's economic and EU challenges.

Before Fame

Growing up in Athens with a father involved in governance and public service, Mitsotakis was familiar with politics from a young age. His international education helped broaden his perspective and prepared him for leadership in a more connected world. Before entering politics, he attended prestigious American universities, including Harvard, where he won the Thomas T. Hoopes Prize. This academic background showed he could connect Greek and international viewpoints.

His political career took off with his 2004 election to parliament, a time when Greece saw economic growth after adopting the euro and hosting the 2004 Olympics. As he rose within New Democracy, Greece faced a financial crisis, which opened the door for leaders focused on reform who could handle both local issues and the demands of international creditors.
