Biography

Muhammadu Buhari (17 December 1942 – 13 July 2025) was a Nigerian general and politician who led Nigeria twice: first as a military head of state from 1983 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. Born in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Army and became a key military figure during some of Nigeria's most challenging times.

Buhari's military career really began during the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970), where he served as a young officer. His military education included time at the Mons Officer Cadet School, Defence Services Staff College, and the United States Army War College. He gained national recognition during Shehu Shagari's presidency by leading Nigerian troops in the Chadian–Nigerian War and building a reputation for discipline and tactical skill.

The economic crisis and rampant corruption of the early 1980s led to Buhari's involvement in the 1983 coup that toppled Nigeria's Second Republic. As head of the military government, he launched the War Against Indiscipline (WAI), a campaign focused on discipline, punctuality, and moral behavior. His administration took strong actions against corruption and adopted tough economic policies to deal with Nigeria's financial problems. However, his strict governance style and harsh economic measures caused tensions within the military, leading to his overthrow by General Ibrahim Babangida on 27 August 1985.

After nearly 30 years away from power, Buhari returned to politics during the democratic period, making unsuccessful presidential bids in 2003, 2007, and 2011 with different political parties. His determination paid off in 2015 when, running on the All Progressives Congress platform, he defeated incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. This marked the first time in Nigerian history that an incumbent president lost re-election. His presidency focused heavily on fighting corruption, tackling the Boko Haram insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, and efforts to diversify the economy. He won re-election in 2019, defeating former Vice President Atiku Abubakar by over 3 million votes, before finishing his second term in 2023.

Before Fame

Born into a modest family in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari grew up in northern Nigeria during the last years of British colonial rule. He started his education locally before joining the Nigerian Army as a young man. The 1960s saw Nigeria gaining independence, which brought opportunities for ambitious young officers. Buhari took these opportunities, pursuing military training both in Nigeria and abroad.

The Nigerian Civil War was Buhari's first major military experience, influencing his views on national unity and discipline. His performance during the war and other military tasks earned him a reputation as a competent and principled officer, paving the way for his rise to national prominence during the political and economic instability of the early 1980s.
