Biography
Munir El Haddadi Mohamed was born on 1 September 1995 in El Escorial, Spain, to Moroccan parents. Known professionally simply as Munir, he is a professional footballer who operates as a forward or right winger. His career has taken him through some of Spain's most prestigious clubs, and his international path has been notably unconventional, having represented both Spain and Morocco at senior level.
Munir began his footballing education in the youth academy of Atlético Madrid before making a significant move to FC Barcelona in 2011. During his time in Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, he won the UEFA Youth League in the 2013–14 season. He made his debut for Barcelona B in March 2014 and, in a rapid progression, scored on his debut for the senior side in August 2014. That season, Barcelona went on to win the treble, encompassing La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League, with Munir contributing as a squad member. The following season he was among the top five scorers in the Copa del Rey, which Barcelona also won.
After his time at Barcelona, Munir moved through a series of Spanish clubs on loan and permanent transfers. He had loan spells at Valencia and Deportivo Alavés in La Liga before joining Sevilla on a permanent basis. At Sevilla, he won the UEFA Europa League in the 2019–20 season, adding a major European trophy to his collection. He subsequently played for Getafe, Las Palmas, and Leganés, establishing himself as a reliable attacking option across the Spanish top flight and its second division.
On the international stage, Munir made his full debut for the Spain national team in 2014, becoming one of the younger players to represent La Roja at senior level. However, in 2021 he made the decision to switch his international allegiance to Morocco, the nation of his heritage. He was subsequently selected for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, representing Morocco on the continental stage. His switch reflected a broader trend of players with dual eligibility choosing to represent their ancestral nations, and he went on to become a contributing attacking option for the Moroccan national team.
As of the time of writing, Munir continues his professional career with Esteghlal, extending his playing experience beyond Spanish football. His career arc, from the youth ranks of Atlético Madrid and Barcelona to clubs across Spain and eventually abroad, alongside his dual international experience, makes him one of the more widely traveled Spanish-raised footballers of his generation.
Before Fame
Munir El Haddadi grew up in El Escorial, a town in the Community of Madrid, Spain, born to Moroccan immigrant parents. From an early age he showed considerable footballing ability, earning a place in the youth system of Atlético Madrid, one of Spain's most storied clubs. His talent was sufficient to attract the attention of FC Barcelona, and he made the move to their celebrated La Masia academy in 2011 at the age of fifteen.
His years at La Masia coincided with a period when Barcelona were widely regarded as the world's leading club side, and the academy was producing a generation of technically accomplished players. Developing in that environment, Munir refined his skills as a forward and right winger, winning the UEFA Youth League in 2013–14 before earning promotion to the B team and, shortly thereafter, his debut with the first team. His rapid rise through the Barcelona system was a direct reflection of both his natural ability and the intense competition he faced and thrived in during those formative years.
