Biography
Myint Swe was born on June 24, 1951, in Mandalay, Myanmar's second-largest city and former royal capital. He went to the Defence Services Academy, Myanmar's top military school, which set him on the path for a career in the Tatmadaw, Myanmar's armed forces. His early military years coincided with military rule in Myanmar, giving him lots of experience in military operations and administration. Throughout his career, he was loyal to the military and worked his way up to a senior position in the Tatmadaw. His marriage to Khin Thet Htay gave him personal stability as he maneuvered through the complicated politics of Myanmar's military system.
Myint Swe moved from military service to political leadership during Myanmar's shift to democracy in the 2010s. In 2016, he was appointed as Myanmar's third First Vice President, putting him in a top political position. As vice president, he stayed loyal to military interests and worked to keep the Tatmadaw's strong role in Myanmar's supposedly civilian government. During this time, he mostly worked behind the scenes, focusing on administrative tasks and acting as a link between military and civilian leaders.
In 2018, Myint Swe briefly became acting president during a transition, showing he was trusted in the political world. This experience was crucial when Myanmar's political scene changed dramatically in early 2021. On February 1, 2021, after disputed election results and rising tensions between the military and civilian government, Myint Swe became acting president through a military coup. He quickly declared a state of emergency and handed executive power to coup leader Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, officially supporting the military takeover through the constitution.
After the 2021 coup, Myint Swe's public presence faded significantly as Min Aung Hlaing became the main figure of Myanmar's military government. His main role during this time was formally renewing and extending Min Aung Hlaing's emergency powers, serving as the constitutional means through which military rule was upheld. This role, while largely ceremonial, was key to providing legal backing for the military government's actions. Myint Swe continued in this role until his death on August 7, 2025, in Naypyidaw, Myanmar's capital, making him the first Burmese vice president to die while in office.
Before Fame
Growing up in Mandalay during the 1950s and 1960s, Myint Swe experienced Myanmar's early independence years and the rise of military power under General Ne Win. His formative years matched Myanmar's shift from a parliamentary democracy to military rule, starting with Ne Win's 1962 coup. This political scene probably influenced his choice to pursue a military career, as the Tatmadaw became the main force in Myanmar society.
His enrollment at the Defence Services Academy marked his entry into Myanmar's most powerful institution. The academy, initially set up by the British colonial administration and later adapted by Myanmar's military leadership, was the main route for military officers who would take on both military and civilian leadership roles. During his time there, Myint Swe would have been trained not only in military tactics and strategy but also in the political thinking that justified military involvement in governance, setting him up for a career that would cover both military service and political leadership.
