Biography
Nguyễn Minh Triết was born in 1942 in Bến Tre Province, South Vietnam, during the French colonial era. He studied mathematics and went on to earn a doctorate in the subject. He began his career as a university lecturer in mathematics, helping to shape education in post-war Vietnam.
Triết moved from academia to politics during Vietnam's economic reform period known as Đổi Mới, which started in the mid-1980s. He joined the Communist Party of Vietnam and gradually advanced through various regional and national government roles. His background in mathematics gave him the analytical skills useful for policy development and administration.
In 2006, Triết was elected as the 6th President of Vietnam by the National Assembly, serving until 2011. As president, he worked on economic development, international relations, and modernization.
