Biography
Nico Erik Rosberg is a German-Finnish former Formula One driver who reached the top of his sport by winning the 2016 World Drivers' Championship with Mercedes. He was born on June 27, 1985, in Wiesbaden, Germany, and is the son of Finnish Formula One legend Keke Rosberg, who won the world title in 1982. This made Nico and his father only the second father-son pair in Formula One to both win World Championships, following Graham and Damon Hill. Rosberg grew up mainly in Monaco and went to the International School of Monaco, giving him a background that suited the global world of Formula One racing.
Rosberg's Formula One career lasted eleven seasons from 2006 to 2016, during which he drove for two teams and became one of the sport's top drivers. He started his F1 career with Williams, where he spent four seasons from 2006 to 2009 and earned two podium finishes in 2008. In 2010, he made a big move to Mercedes, initially teaming up with seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher. His first Grand Prix win was at the 2012 Chinese Grand Prix, marking the start of his rise as a consistent race winner. From 2013 to 2016, Rosberg had one of the most intense rivalries in Formula One history with his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Their relationship went back to their karting days as friends and rivals.
The 2016 season was the peak of Rosberg's career as he fought with Hamilton for the championship throughout the year. He finished second to his British teammate in 2014 and 2015, but his continuous improvement as a driver finally paid off in his last season. He overcame Hamilton's challenge and won his first and only World Drivers' Championship, achieving a lifelong dream influenced by his father's success. His victory was based on consistency, smart strategies, and performing under the pressure of competing for Formula One's top prize.
In a surprising move that shocked the motorsport world, Rosberg announced his retirement from Formula One just five days after winning the championship. He wanted to spend more time with his family and was concerned that his driving skills might decline, which led him to step away at the height of his career. This decision meant he left the sport as the reigning world champion, a rare event in Formula One. During his career, he raced in 206 Grand Prix events, winning 23, securing 30 pole positions, 20 fastest laps, and 57 podium finishes. After racing, he moved into entrepreneurship and broadcasting, earning awards like the Lorenzo Bandini Trophy, the Laureus World Sports Award for Breakthrough of the Year, and the ADAC Motorsportler des Jahres in 2016.
Before Fame
Rosberg's journey to Formula One kicked off when he was just six, starting with competitive kart racing like his dad, a world champion. He quickly found success, winning regional and national French championships before moving up to European and world-level series. At 16, he switched to car racing and showed his talent by taking nine race wins to capture the 2002 Formula BMW ADAC Championship with VIVA Racing.
He continued moving up through junior levels by competing in the Formula 3 Euro Series with Team Rosberg in 2003 and 2004, where he sharpened his skills alongside other future Formula One stars. The turning point in his pre-F1 career came in 2005 when he won the first GP2 Series championship with ART Grand Prix, the main pathway to Formula One. This win, along with his family background and proven ability, helped him land a seat with Williams for the 2006 Formula One season.
