Biography

Nikolaj William Coster-Waldau was born on July 27, 1970, in Rudkøbing, Denmark. He received his training at the Danish National School of Performing Arts, which laid the groundwork for his acting career. His big break came in 1994 with the Danish film Nightwatch, directed by Ole Bornedal, making him a notable name in Scandinavian cinema. This early success led to opportunities in both local and international productions, paving the way for a career across various continents and genres.

Coster-Waldau's move to Hollywood began with his role as Medal of Honor recipient Master Sergeant Gary Gordon in Ridley Scott's war film Black Hawk Down (2001). This role showed his knack for serious dramatic roles and marked his entry into major American films. He also appeared in television, featuring in the short-lived Fox series New Amsterdam (2008) as a detective and the TV film Virtuality (2009), initially intended as a pilot for a series.

The role that gained Coster-Waldau worldwide fame was Jaime Lannister in HBO's fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, which aired from 2011 to 2019. His portrayal of the complex character, known as the Kingslayer, earned him critical praise and two Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. The character's journey from seeming villain to morally complex figure allowed Coster-Waldau to show his wide range as an actor throughout the show's eight seasons.

Throughout his career, Coster-Waldau has kept strong connections to Scandinavian cinema while growing his presence in international films. Notable works include the Norwegian thriller Headhunters (2011) and the drama A Thousand Times Good Night (2013). He has also been part of major studio films like the fantasy movie Gods of Egypt (2016). Beyond acting, he has taken on producing roles and engaged in humanitarian efforts, serving as a UNDP Goodwill Ambassador since 2021, focusing on gender equality and climate change. He is married to Nukâka Coster-Waldau, a Greenlandic actress and singer.

Before Fame

Growing up in Rudkøbing, a small town on the Danish island of Langeland, Coster-Waldau got interested in performance arts as a kid. He followed this passion by enrolling at the Danish National School of Performing Arts, one of Denmark's top institutions for theater training. The school's demanding program prepared him for both stage and screen work, focusing on classical techniques that would later shape his approach to complex characters.

In the 1990s, the Danish film industry was gaining international attention, partly due to the Dogme 95 movement started by directors like Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. This was a time when young Danish actors could work in innovative productions that caught the world's eye. Coster-Waldau's casting in Nightwatch happened during this creative buzz, when Danish cinema was becoming a major player in European filmmaking.
