Biography

Joseph-Achille Mbembe is a Cameroonian historian, political theorist, and philosopher born in 1957. He is a research professor in history and politics at the Wits Institute for Social and Economy Research at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa. Mbembe is recognized as one of the most influential postcolonial theorists today, making significant contributions to critical theory and African political thought.

Mbembe studied in France at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne and Sciences Po. This education greatly shaped his theoretical approach, placing him as a leading figure in French critical theory while focusing on African and postcolonial issues. His academic career has taken him across the globe, giving him a broad perspective on decolonization and political theory.

His most well-known idea is "necropolitics," which builds on Michel Foucault's concept of biopolitics to explore how power controls mortality. This idea is key in discussions about state violence, colonialism, and the politics of death. His book "Necropolitics" has been widely cited and translated, offering new ways to understand power in postcolonial contexts. His work "On the Postcolony" also gives critical insights into African politics after colonialism.

Mbembe is married to Sarah Nuttall. His academic achievements have earned him many prestigious awards. He became a Member of the Academy of Science of South Africa and received an honorary doctorate from Paris 8 University in 2014. Other honors include the Geschwister-Scholl-Preis in 2015, the Ernst Bloch Award and Gerda Henkel Prize in 2018, and the Albertus-Magnus professorship in 2019. Recently, he was named a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy in 2023 and received the Holberg International Memorial Prize in 2024, affirming his place as a leading social theorist.

Before Fame

Born in Cameroon soon after the country gained independence, Mbembe grew up seeing the challenges of postcolonial African governance. As he was growing up, the country moved towards one-party rule under Ahmadou Ahidjo and later Paul Biya, giving him a firsthand look at the political atmosphere he would later explore in his academic work.

His rise in the intellectual world began when he moved to France for higher education in the 1970s and 1980s, a time when French universities were hotbeds of new theoretical ideas. This gave him the chance to dive into poststructuralist and postcolonial theories, while creating his own unique approach that linked African political experiences with modern European critical theory.
