Biography
Lorik Agim Cana is a former Albanian professional footballer born on July 27, 1983, in Pristina, Yugoslavia (now Kosovo). He played mainly as a center-back and midfielder during a successful career that stretched over a decade across Europe's top leagues. Cana played for Albania from 2003 to 2016, earning 94 caps and serving as captain from 2011 until he retired from international football.
Cana started his club career at Paris Saint-Germain, where he won the Coupe de France in the 2003-04 season. He then moved to Marseille in 2004 and eventually became the captain there. In 2009, he joined Sunderland, becoming the first player of Albanian origin in the Premier League, and was named captain right away. He later played for Turkish giants Galatasaray and Italian club Lazio, spending four seasons there and winning the Coppa Italia in 2012-13.
Even though he had passports for Albania, Switzerland, and France, Cana chose to play for Albania, making his debut in June 2003 at the age of 19. He was a key player in Albanian football, leading the national team through growth and progress, ultimately captaining Albania at UEFA Euro 2016 in France, their first major international tournament.
After retiring from professional football, Cana moved into roles focused on football development. In October 2017, he was appointed Grassroots ambassador for children's football in Albania by the Albanian Football Association. His record of 94 international appearances for Albania stood until 2025, when Elseid Hysaj surpassed it. Throughout his career, Cana was known for his versatility, leadership, and dedication to developing Albanian football.
Before Fame
Cana's early life was shaped by the political turmoil in the Balkans during the 1980s and 1990s. Born in Pristina when it was part of Yugoslavia, he grew up amid significant ethnic tension and conflict in Kosovo. At age 16, he was invited to trial with Arsenal but couldn't attend because his British visa was denied, likely due to the political situation in Kosovo.
Despite this setback, Cana's talent was recognized by Paris Saint-Germain, where he began his professional career. His early experiences with different national identities and multiple passports were common for many from the former Yugoslavia. This background later influenced his choice to represent Albania internationally, even though he had other options.
