Biography
Obafemi Akinwunmi Martins was born on October 28, 1984, in Lagos, Nigeria. Known for his speed and knack for scoring goals, Martins left Nigeria for Italy at 16, starting a professional career that took him across Europe, Russia, the United States, and China. His skills and speed made him a desired attacker in top-level club football for over ten years.
Martins started his senior career in 2002 with Inter Milan in Serie A, becoming one of the most dangerous young strikers in Italian football. While at Inter, he won the Serie A title, the Italian Cup twice, and the Italian Super Cup. His best scoring season in Italy was 2004–05, with 11 league goals. He also played in the UEFA Champions League with the club, gaining crucial international experience. In 2006, Newcastle United bought him, bringing him to the Premier League.
At Newcastle, Martins had one of his best individual seasons, scoring 17 league goals in 2006–07, a number he later matched in Major League Soccer. He moved to VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga in 2009, then joined Rubin Kazan in the Russian Premier League in 2010. Rubin loaned him to Birmingham City in 2011, where he scored the winning goal in the 2011 Football League Cup final against Arsenal. This goal, scored late as a substitute, secured a 2–1 victory and Birmingham's first major trophy in 50 years.
After a season with Spanish La Liga club Levante, Martins joined Major League Soccer in 2013, signing with Seattle Sounders FC. He became a favorite in the Pacific Northwest, scoring 17 goals in the 2014 MLS season and helping make the Sounders a strong team in the league. He left Seattle in 2015 and then played in the Chinese Super League, representing Shanghai Shenhua and Wuhan before retiring from professional football.
In international football, Martins played for Nigeria at the senior level and was included in the Super Eagles squad for the Africa Cup of Nations in 2006, 2008, and 2010, as well as the FIFA World Cup in 2010 in South Africa. Although his international appearances weren't as outstanding as his club career, he was part of the Nigerian team during a competitive time for African football. His career across four continents and nearly two decades made him one of the most traveled Nigerian footballers of his generation.
Before Fame
Obafemi Martins grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, a city known for its strong love of football and for producing many professional players. During the 1990s, when Nigerian football was becoming more recognized internationally thanks to the Super Eagles' impressive performances at the 1994 and 1996 Olympic Games and World Cups, Martins was surrounded by a community where football was both a popular hobby and a way out of poverty for gifted young athletes.
At 16, Martins moved to Italy, showing the trend of African talent moving into European academies and clubs at that time. Italian clubs, especially those in Serie A, were actively looking for young African players. Martins's speed and natural shooting talent soon captured the attention of Inter Milan. By 2002, he moved from youth football to playing professionally with Inter, starting a career that would take him to some of the top football leagues in the world.
