Biography

Antti Oskari Tokoi was born on April 15, 1873, in Kannus, a small town in western Finland. He became an important figure in Finnish labor and political history. Starting as a working-class activist, Tokoi advanced in the Finnish labor movement and played a key role in the Social Democratic Party of Finland. He made his mark in world history by becoming the Chairman of the Senate of Finland in 1917, becoming the first social democratic leader of a government globally. His time in office marked significant change in Finnish politics as the country moved toward independence from Imperial Russia.

Before Fame

Tokoi grew up in late nineteenth-century Finland, part of the Russian Empire, when Finnish national identity was becoming more prominent and the labor movement was gaining momentum among both industrial and rural workers.
