Biography

Park Ji-sung, born on March 30, 1981, in Seoul, South Korea, played as a midfielder and is often considered one of the best Asian footballers. Over his professional career, he won 19 trophies. Known for his outstanding fitness, relentless work ethic, and sharp off-the-ball moves, he earned the nickname 'Three-Lung' Park. He could play across the entire midfield, making him a versatile player at every club he joined.

Park started his senior career in South Korea before attending the Osaka University of Economics and Law and later Myongji University, where he also played university football. He moved to Japan to join Kyoto Purple Sanga, and his performances caught the eye of international coaches. After South Korea finished fourth at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Park joined Dutch club PSV Eindhoven under national team coach Guus Hiddink. At PSV, he won two Eredivisie titles, a KNVB Cup, and a Johan Cruyff Shield. His impressive play in the 2004–05 UEFA Champions League semi-finals caught the attention of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

Park signed with Manchester United in July 2005 for about £4 million, marking a seven-year tenure with one of the world's top clubs. While at Old Trafford, he won 11 trophies, including four Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League in 2008, and the FIFA Club World Cup. He was the first Asian footballer to win the UEFA Champions League, appear in a UEFA Champions League final, and lift the FIFA Club World Cup. Scoring a key goal at Camp Nou against Barcelona in the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League was a highlight of his career.

In 2012, Park moved to Queens Park Rangers, but a tough season with injuries and the club’s relegation hurt his impact. He then went back to PSV Eindhoven on loan for the 2013–14 season before retiring due to a persistent knee injury. Park married Kim Min-ji, and after retirement, he moved into football administration and ambassadorial roles.

As an international player, Park earned 100 caps for South Korea and scored 13 goals. He played in three consecutive FIFA World Cups in 2002, 2006, and 2010 and was named man of the match four times in World Cup play, a record at the time. His efforts helped raise the profile of Asian players in top European football.

Before Fame

Park Ji-sung grew up in Seoul when South Korean football was building its professional scene. He studied at the Osaka University of Economics and Law and then finished his studies at Myongji University in South Korea, where he also played football. He developed in a football setting that had few ways to reach elite European competitions, and it was rare for South Korean players to play at the sport's highest levels.

His move to Kyoto Purple Sanga in Japan was an important step toward playing professional football in a more competitive league. The experience he gained at the club, along with his standout performances for the South Korean national team during the 2002 FIFA World Cup co-hosted by South Korea and Japan, made him one of the continent's most promising players. Guus Hiddink, who managed South Korea during that tournament, brought Park to PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, which eventually led to his move to Manchester United.
