Biography

Paulino Alcántara Riestrá (7 October 1896 – 13 February 1964) was a Spanish-Filipino footballer, manager, doctor, and soldier who reached legendary status at FC Barcelona while having several careers. Born in Iloilo City, Philippines, to a Spanish father and Filipino mother, Alcántara moved to Barcelona as a child and joined the football club that became central to his athletic life. He first played for Barcelona at just 15, making him the youngest player in the club's history to play and score. Over his 15-year career from 1912 to 1927, Alcántara became one of the top goalscorers in football, scoring 395 goals in 399 matches—a club record that lasted 87 years until Lionel Messi broke it. His international career was also impressive, as he played for three teams: Catalonia, the Philippines, and Spain, highlighting his mixed heritage and the political complexities of his time. During his playing career, Alcántara helped Barcelona win 19 trophies, including 10 Spanish Catalan League titles, 5 Copa del Rey wins, 2 Pyrenees Cup victories, and 2 Philippine League championships. After retiring from football in 1927 at age 31, Alcántara became a doctor. He kept his ties to Barcelona by serving as club director from 1931 to 1934 and later led the FC Barcelona Player Association in 1959. His life also included involvement in politics and military service. During the Spanish Civil War in 1936, he sided with conservative forces and served as a requeté soldier in the Spanish Army. In 1951, he returned to football as a coach, managing the Spanish national team for three games. Alcántara passed away in Barcelona on 13 February 1964, having led a diverse life that spanned sports, medicine, politics, and military service across two continents.

Before Fame

Born in Iloilo City during the last years of Spanish rule in the Philippines, Paulino Alcántara grew up during a major political change as the islands shifted from Spanish to American control after the Spanish-American War. When his family moved to Barcelona, he found opportunities that weren't available in the Philippines, where organized football was still in its early stages. Alcántara's athletic talent was clear from a young age, and he joined FC Barcelona when the club was still growing and football was becoming Spain's top sport. The early 20th century was a high point for Barcelona football, as the club drew talented players from Spain and beyond, creating a setting where a young player like Alcántara could thrive and overcome age-related challenges.
