Biography

Paulo César Wanchope Watson was born on July 31, 1976, in Heredia, Costa Rica. He became one of Costa Rica's top strikers and later moved into coaching, making a big impact on both local and international soccer. Wanchope started his professional career with Herediano before moving to Europe, where he became a strong player in the English Premier League.

Wanchope played in the Premier League with three clubs: Derby County, West Ham United, and Manchester City. His speed, height, and goal-scoring skills made him a key player during the late 1990s and early 2000s. He also played in other countries, including La Liga with Málaga, Major League Soccer with Chicago Fire, and at clubs like Al-Gharafa in Qatar, Rosario Central in Argentina, and FC Tokyo in Japan.

Internationally, Wanchope became Costa Rica's second-highest goalscorer, with 45 goals in 73 matches for his national team. His World Cup games were especially impressive, scoring against Brazil in 2002 and twice against Germany in 2006. These feats made him Costa Rica's top World Cup scorer, a record he shares with Rónald Gómez.

After retiring as a player, Wanchope moved into coaching and management. He led the Costa Rica national team from 2014 to 2015, reaching the peak of his coaching career. He also managed several Costa Rican clubs: Herediano, Uruguay Coronado, CS Cartaginés, and Pérez Zeledón. Most recently, he was the head coach of Deportivo Saprissa, one of Costa Rica's top clubs, continuing to influence Costa Rican football at the highest levels.

Before Fame

Wanchope grew up in Heredia during the 1980s and early 1990s, when Costa Rican football was starting to gain international attention. In this time, Costa Rica qualified for their first World Cup in 1990, inspiring young players like Wanchope. He honed his skills in the youth system before moving up with local club Herediano.

The route to European football for Central American players was opening up more in the mid-1990s, as scouts began to explore beyond traditional areas. Wanchope's mix of physical strength and technical skill drew the interest of English clubs, leading him to the Premier League. There, he built his reputation as an effective striker.
