Biography

Rodrigo Alberto de Jesús Chaves Robles was born on June 10, 1961, in Managua, Nicaragua, to Costa Rican parents. He got his early education in Costa Rica before heading to the University of Costa Rica, where he began studying economics. He later continued his studies at Ohio State University in the United States, earning advanced degrees that shaped his career in international development and economic policy.

Chaves spent over two decades at the World Bank, working in various roles related to economic development and policy analysis. He became a respected expert in Latin American economics and development finance. While at the World Bank, he worked on projects in different countries and regions, gaining a deep understanding of the economic challenges faced by developing nations.

In 2019, Chaves returned to Costa Rica to serve as Minister of Finance under President Carlos Alvarado Quesada. He brought international experience to the finance ministry during a time of significant fiscal challenges for the country. However, his time as minister was brief, ending in 2020, after which he moved into electoral politics.

Chaves ran in the 2022 Costa Rican presidential election as a candidate for the Social Democratic Progress Party. He emphasized economic reform and anti-corruption in his campaign, advancing to the second round of voting. In the runoff, he defeated former president José María Figueres and secured the presidency with his message of economic modernization and institutional reform.

Since taking office in May 2022 as Costa Rica's 49th president, Chaves has focused on addressing the country's fiscal deficit and implementing economic reforms. His administration has worked to streamline government operations and attract foreign investment while maintaining Costa Rica's commitment to environmental protection and social stability. He has received international recognition, including the Collar of Order of Manuel Amador Guerrero and the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 1st class, awarded in 2024.

Before Fame

Before getting into Costa Rican politics, Chaves spent most of his career in international development at the World Bank. He studied economics in both Costa Rica and the U.S., which gave him the knowledge he needed for jobs in development finance and policy analysis. His more than twenty years at the World Bank gave him insight into economic challenges in various regions and development situations.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, there was a growing focus on economic integration and development in Latin America. This shift created opportunities for economists with global experience. During this time, Chaves made a name for himself as someone who understood both the technical sides of economic policy and the real-world hurdles of implementing it in developing countries. His move from international civil service to local politics was part of a larger trend of experts getting into politics in Latin America during times of economic uncertainty.
