Biography

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski Godard, known as PPK, was born on 3 October 1938 in the Miraflores District of Lima, Peru. His parents were European immigrants who fled Germany due to the Nazi regime, giving him a cosmopolitan outlook and multilingual skills. He studied at prestigious institutions like Princeton University, the University of Oxford, the University of Cambridge, and even trained at the Royal College of Music. Kuczynski gained expertise in economics, public policy, and finance, thanks to schools like Rossall School and Markham College, which blended European and Latin American ideas.

In his early career, Kuczynski worked in international finance, holding key roles at the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. He then returned to Peru to become the general manager of Peru's Central Reserve Bank. He first joined the government in the early 1980s as Minister of Energy and Mines under President Fernando Belaúnde Terry. In the 2000s, President Alejandro Toledo brought him back to public service as Minister of Economy and Finance and then as Prime Minister, making Kuczynski a well-known technocratic leader in Peru.

Kuczynski ran for president in 2011 but finished third, later supporting Keiko Fujimori in the runoff. He tried again in 2016 and narrowly beat Fujimori in the second round, taking office as president on 28 July 2016. His time as president was marked by clashes with the opposition-led Congress, mainly Fujimori's Popular Force party. In December 2017, Congress began impeachment proceedings, accusing Kuczynski of lying about financial ties to the Brazilian firm Odebrecht, which was involved in a large corruption scandal across Latin America. Although he survived an initial impeachment vote, he resigned on 23 March 2018, just before a likely second impeachment.

After resigning, Kuczynski faced legal issues tied to corruption, money laundering, and the Odebrecht scandal. He has been in pretrial detention since April 2019 as investigations continue. Despite his political downfall, his career is quite unique in modern Peruvian politics, mixing international financial experience with a late rise to the presidency. He has received several honors, including the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun of Peru in 2006, the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 2001, the Grand Collar of the Order of the Andes' Condor in 2016, and Princeton University's James Madison Medal in 2017.

Before Fame

Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, born to German immigrant parents who fled Nazi persecution, grew up in Lima with a mix of European and Peruvian influences. He studied at Markham College in Lima, then moved abroad for further education at Rossall School in England. He continued his studies at prestigious institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, and Princeton, as well as the Royal College of Music, showcasing a wide range of interests.

Kuczynski's career began in international finance rather than domestic politics. In the postwar era, as international bodies like the World Bank and IMF played key roles in developing economies, he made a name for himself in these organizations. His skills as an economist made him an important figure in Peruvian financial circles, leading to his roles as head of Peru's Central Reserve Bank and later as a government minister. He only seriously pursued the presidency when he was in his sixties.
