Biography

Peter Pellegrini was born on October 6, 1975, in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. He studied at Matej Bel University and the Technical University of Košice, which set the stage for his career in public service. Pellegrini entered Slovak politics with the Direction – Social Democracy party, led by Robert Fico, and climbed the political ladder over the next twenty years. His career shows both the opportunities and challenges in Slovak politics after communism.

Before reaching the top office, Pellegrini held several important government roles. He was Minister of Education and Science in 2014, and Speaker of the National Council from 2014 to 2016. He then became Deputy Prime Minister from 2016 to 2018 and was appointed Prime Minister in 2018, staying in that role until 2020. During the last months of his term, he also briefly took on the role of Minister of Health from December 2019 to March 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic began in Europe.

In June 2020, Pellegrini left Direction – Social Democracy to start a new political party, Voice – Social Democracy, which he has led since. His split from his former party was due to both personal and political disagreements, and Voice – Social Democracy quickly became a significant player in Slovak politics. Pellegrini served again as Speaker of the National Council from 2023 to 2024, solidifying his role in different areas of government.

In January 2024, Pellegrini announced he would run for President of Slovakia. In the first round, he came in second to former diplomat Ivan Korčok. However, on April 6, 2024, Pellegrini won the second round with about 53% of the vote. He was inaugurated as Slovakia's sixth President on June 15, 2024. Along with his election, he received multiple state awards in 2024, including the Andrej Hlinka Order Class I and the Ľudovít Štúr Order 1st Class, among others.

Pellegrini is the first Slovak politician to have held the country's three highest offices: President, Prime Minister, and Speaker of the National Council. This wide-ranging experience in both executive and legislative roles makes him a key figure in modern Slovak politics.

Before Fame

Peter Pellegrini grew up in Banská Bystrica, a city in central Slovakia known for its strong historical and cultural character. He came of age during a significant time in Slovak history, as the country moved away from communist rule following the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and later became an independent nation in 1993. These years shaped many Slovak politicians who would later establish the country's democratic institutions.

After graduating from Matej Bel University and the Technical University of Košice, Pellegrini entered politics with the Direction – Social Democracy party, which was a leading force in Slovak politics in the 2000s and 2010s. His early career involved steady progress within the party, gaining extensive experience in education, health, and legislative leadership, before becoming Prime Minister in 2018.
