Petr Nečas

Biography

Petr Nečas, born on November 19, 1964, is a former Czech politician who served as the country's Prime Minister and led the Civic Democratic Party (ODS) from 2010 to 2013. He was born in Uherské Hradiště and obtained a degree in natural sciences with a focus on physics from Masaryk University in Brno before starting his political career in the early 1990s. As a co-founder of the Civic Democratic Party in 1991, Nečas became an important figure in Czech center-right politics during its shift to democracy.

In 1993, Nečas was elected as a Member of the Chamber of Deputies and served on the Foreign Committee before becoming Chairman of the Committee on Security three years later. His colleagues called him "Fidel" due to his long filibustering speeches. In 2006, he was appointed Minister of Labour and Social Affairs under Prime Minister Mirek Topolánek. After the 2010 legislative election, Nečas became Prime Minister, heading a coalition government with TOP 09 and Public Affairs, though the latter was eventually replaced by Liberal Democrats.

During his time as Prime Minister, Nečas focused on tackling economic issues caused by the 2008 financial crisis and Great Recession. Faced with a large government deficit, he implemented austerity measures to cut national debt, which pleased fiscal conservatives but drew criticism from those affected by cuts. His government passed several major but controversial reforms, such as church property restitution, pension reform, and changes in higher education. While these measures met policy goals, they were widely unpopular with the public.

Nečas's political career came to a sudden end on June 17, 2013, when he resigned due to a corruption scandal involving his chief of staff Jana Nagyová, who later became his wife. The police investigation and resignation led to a snap election in 2013, where his party ODS experienced its worst electoral defeat, securing only 16 seats and moving into the opposition. Despite the controversial end to his career, supporters credit him with making important fiscal reforms that helped stabilize Czech public finances during a time of economic uncertainty.
