Biography

Philip IV of Spain, born Felipe Domingo Victor de la Cruz de Austria y Austria on April 8, 1605, at the Royal Palace of Valladolid, became king of Spain in 1621 at sixteen after his father Philip III died. Known as the Planet King (Rey Planeta), he ruled over the huge Spanish Empire during one of its toughest times. His reign included the Thirty Years' War and many conflicts that weakened Spain's power in Europe. Despite inheriting an empire spanning about 12.2 million square kilometers, the largest ever, Philip struggled with the reforms needed to manage such vast lands.

Philip ruled both Spain and Portugal, acting as Philip III in Portugal until the Portuguese Restoration War in 1640 ended the Iberian Union. Failing to stop the Portuguese uprising led by John IV was a major blow and showed the difficulties of managing such a varied empire. Throughout his reign, military costs and financial struggles put a strain on the royal treasury. He depended on the Count-Duke of Olivares as his chief minister early on, shaping many policies, though their relationship later fell apart.

Despite setbacks, Philip IV was a great art patron. He was closely linked with Diego Velázquez, who was his court painter and did many royal portraits. His art collection had works by Rubens, Titian, and other masters, making the Spanish court a hub of art. His support extended to literature, theater, and architecture, playing a key role in Spain's cultural golden age.

Philip married twice, first to Elisabeth of France in 1615 and then to Mariana of Austria in 1649 after Elisabeth died. His personal life included many extramarital affairs, leading to several illegitimate children as well as legitimate heirs. When Philip died on September 17, 1665, at the Royal Alcázar of Madrid, his son Charles II took over. Charles's poor health and lack of an heir eventually led to the War of Spanish Succession and the end of Habsburg rule in Spain.

Before Fame

Philip's early life in the Spanish court was shaped by strict routines and preparation for his future as a king under the Habsburg dynasty. Born during the time of his grandfather Philip II, he was educated in subjects like statecraft, languages, and military affairs, all important for a future monarch. His father, Philip III's reign, had already shown signs of Spain's decline, with economic problems and territorial losses that Philip IV would later have to deal with.

The young prince grew up while Spain was involved in ongoing European conflicts, such as the Dutch Revolt and tensions with France. When he ascended to the throne at a young age, he had to rely heavily on experienced advisors. One in particular, Gaspar de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares, played a dominant role during the early years of his reign, heavily influencing the main policy decisions that would shape his rule.
