Biography
Alfred Joel Horford Reynoso, known as Al Horford or Big Al, was born on June 3, 1986, in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. He has become one of the most successful Dominican basketball players in NBA history, known for his versatility as a center and power forward who can contribute in many ways on the court. His basketball journey began in high school at Grand Ledge High School in Michigan, where his standout skills caught the attention of top college programs.
Horford's college career at the University of Florida was a turning point, both for his development and for the program's achievements. Playing for the Florida Gators from 2004 to 2007, he became the starting center for two NCAA national championship teams in 2006 and 2007. His consistency and leadership helped Florida dominate college basketball during this time. These successes made him one of the top prospects for the 2007 NBA Draft.
The Atlanta Hawks picked Horford as the third overall choice in the 2007 NBA Draft, launching a professional career that would last nearly 20 years and include multiple teams. During his nine years with the Hawks, he became a five-time NBA All-Star, showing his skills in scoring, rebounding, and facilitating from the center position. His reliable shooting, even extending to three-point range, added value in the modern NBA's focus on spacing and versatility.
After his time with the Hawks, Horford signed with the Boston Celtics in 2016 as a free agent, playing a key role in their success for three seasons. His career also took him to the Philadelphia 76ers and Oklahoma City Thunder before he returned to Boston in 2021. In his second run with the Celtics, he was instrumental in helping the team reach the NBA Finals in both 2022 and 2024, winning his first NBA championship in 2024. Throughout his career, Horford has been known not only for his on-court performance but also for his professional attitude and leadership. He married Amelia Vega, a former Miss Universe from the Dominican Republic, solidifying his status as a key figure in Dominican sports and culture.
Before Fame
Al Horford's journey to basketball fame started when his family moved from the Dominican Republic to the United States, where there were more opportunities to develop basketball talent. His father, Tito Horford, also played professional basketball, giving Al early exposure to the sport's basics and competitive side. While at Grand Ledge High School in Michigan, Horford's mix of size, skill, and basketball smarts caught the attention of college scouts.
In the early 2000s, college basketball programs were starting to notice and recruit international players, especially from regions like the Caribbean where basketball was growing. Horford joined the University of Florida just as coach Billy Donovan was working to create a strong program that could compete at the highest college level. His growth during this time showed a shift in basketball towards more adaptable big men who could do more than traditional center roles.
