Luis Abinader
Current President of the Dominican Republic since 2020, businessman and economist who leads the Modern Revolutionary Party.
Biography
Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona was born on July 12, 1967, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. He studied at several well-known institutions, including Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Hult International Business School, Loyola College in Belo Horizonte, Harvard University, and Dartmouth College. His wide-ranging education in economics and business administration became crucial for his later career.
Before getting into politics, Abinader made a name for himself as a businessman. He was the general manager of Grupo Empresarial Abinader Corona (Grupo ABICOR), a business group his father, José Rafael Abinader, started. His father was also a senator and finance minister. The business includes real estate and construction companies mainly focused on tourism, a concrete company, and a private university. His skills in business and family ties in politics and commerce gave him a unique position in Dominican society.
Abinader's political journey began with the Modern Revolutionary Party, and he ran for the presidency in 2016, 2020, and 2024. He won in 2020, becoming the 54th president of the Dominican Republic. His term started during the global COVID-19 pandemic, and he received positive feedback for his handling of the crisis from many social and business sectors in the country.
As president, Abinader has been active in international discussions, especially with American groups like the Council of the Americas and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. He has promoted the Dominican Republic as a fast-growing economy in the Americas and a great place for international investment. Bloomberg Línea named him as the Dominican Republic's wealthiest president in 2022, highlighting his business success and the financial transparency debates during his presidency, including reports from the Pandora Papers about his offshore company ownership.
In 2024, Abinader was re-elected for a second term. In his victory speech, he stated that the changes from his first term would be lasting. His leadership continues to blend business experience with political authority to guide the country's economic path.
Before Fame
Abinader's rise was greatly influenced by his family's established role in Dominican politics and business. His father, José Rafael Abinader, had already paved the way with his work as a senator and finance minister, while also building a business conglomerate that Luis would later oversee. These political ties and business legacy gave young Abinader unique insights into both fields.
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the Dominican Republic was experiencing economic changes and greater integration with global markets, especially in tourism and manufacturing. Abinader's broad international education during this time, which included studies at institutions across the Americas, put him in a good position to take advantage of these new opportunities. His leadership in tourism-related real estate and construction fit well with the country's rising status as a Caribbean destination, while his political goals were in line with a generation of leaders aiming to update Dominican governance with private sector knowledge.
